Im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert war Europa eine Brutstätte des politischen und religiösen Aufruhrs. Vor diesem Hintergrund hinterließen einige bemerkenswerte Persönlichkeiten ihre Spuren in der Geschichte. Eine der bemerkenswertesten Persönlichkeiten dieser Zeit war Elisabeth I. von England, die mehr als vier Jahrzehnte lang in einer Zeit großer Umwälzungen regierte. Ihre Herrschaft zeichnete sich durch ein starkes Engagement für die Verteidigung der Interessen ihres Landes sowohl im In- als auch im Ausland aus. Eine weitere bedeutende Persönlichkeit war Ludwig XIV. von Frankreich, der mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert lang regierte und die Expansion der Macht und des Einflusses seines Landes überwachte. Weitere bedeutende Persönlichkeiten aus dieser Zeit sind Oliver Cromwell, der Anführer der puritanischen Revolution in England, Gustavus Adolphus, der schwedische König, der dazu beitrug, das Blatt im Dreißigjährigen Krieg zu wenden, und Kardinal Richelieu, der oberste Minister von Ludwig XIV, der eine Schlüsselrolle bei der Konsolidierung der französischen Macht spielte. Diese und andere Persönlichkeiten trugen dazu bei, den Verlauf der europäischen Geschichte in dieser turbulenten Zeit zu gestalten.
