A brand new World War II Ambulance joins Oxford’s 1:76 scale Military series and it has wartime Royal connections. It has also featured in several media roles of the period, notably  the film Ice Cold in Alex starring John Mills, where it was called ‘Katy, Our model brings back to life that vehicle as it appeared in the movie.  Many images of the then Princess Elizabeth in her wartime ATS uniform show her either under the bonnet or behind the wheel of a K2 Ambulance which she was trained to drive.

The Austin K2/Y Ambulance, affectionately known as KATY, was built between 1939 and 1945 by Austin at their Longbridge plant in conjunction with Mann Egerton - well-known for their bus body manufacturing expertise. It was quite a large vehicle, 18ft in length, 7ft 5 inches wide and just over 9 feet high. To save as much space as possible for the wounded, the crew was limited to 2-3 personnel. Weighing just over 3 tons, the K2 came with a 6-cylinder 3462 Austin D-Series engine with four speed gearbox and had a top speed of around 50 mph. The vehicle featured two petrol tanks, one on each side holding 12 gallons of fuel each. Just over 13,000 K2 Ambulances were built and proved very popular with British and Commonwealth troops as well as US forces. Two large doors across the back opened up to enable the K2 to accommodate ten casualties sitting or four stretchers. The rear body had been designed specially by the Royal Army Medical Corps and built by Mann Egerton. The driver’s cab did not have doors but folding canvas sheets instead.  Similar access also meant that the patients could be reached from the driver’s cab through a small internal door with a seat. The exterior of the vehicle comprised mostly painted canvas. A feature which helps date the variations of the K2 was the shape of the roof vents. Early ones were round and later ones square. Our Oxford tooling is based on the early version with round roof ventilators.

And so on to our detailed replica.  The physical features of the real thing are there for you to appreciate.  Decorated in a sand camouflage colour scheme with darker sand canvas roll up doors and seating, the Red Cross logo appears on every surface. The yellow bridge plate is printed with the number 5 and the leaping red gazelle against the white background on both the front and rear signifies deployment to the Western Desert, home to the gazelle. The white WD Census number of our K2 – A121370 KATY- is printed along the edge of the bonnet and also along the bottom of the offside back door

In addition to its deployment in the West African Campaign, after the War, the K2 Ambulance also served in Germany with the Allies, followed by action in the Korean War in the 1950s. It is estimated that around 50 examples still survive today, which is a heartening thought.

Oxford Diecast RASC-Katy Western Desert Austin K2 Ambulance is a 1:76 Scale (00) model and as well as a collectable, it also makes a great addition to model railway layout or diorama.

It's hard af.
Color: Right - Grey, Size: Small, Color: Right - Grey, Size: Small
Edit: just realized Amazon sent me a left handed one! I got this one and the g2 or whatever with the strap. The g2 is great. This one is hard though. The edges of the rest thingy. And the edges in the middle where it splits are annoying. Idk if it's a difference in the rubber pads or what. Even if this works for wrist pain, it's not worth it for the palm discomfort.

Ergonomic and effective, but requires adjustment.
Color: Right - White, Size: Large
Bought this for improving wrist posture during long hours at the desk. What I like • The ergonomic design helps reduce wrist strain, especially during extended typing sessions. • The right-handed orientation is comfortable and natural to use. • High-quality build, feels sturdy and durable. What could be better • It takes some time to adjust to the unique design, especially if you’re used to traditional mice. • The size may not be suitable for people with smaller hands. • It could be a bit pricey compared to other ergonomic mice on the market. Bottom line: A great investment for improving wrist posture and reducing strain, but it might not be for everyone due to the learning curve and price. Perfect for users looking to enhance ergonomics, but consider alternatives if you have smaller hands or need a more budget-friendly option.

It’s painful. Not worth it.
Color: Right - Grey, Size: Small, Color: Right - Grey, Size: Small
I hate it. Period. Very strong feelings about it right out of the box. Gave it a few days, and not only do I still hate it but it’s very painful to use. The rubber material is hard and has pressure points that make you come away feeling like you’ve rested your wrist on the edge of a table for too long. I come away more sore using this than not. They only have small and large sizes, I think the small is too small for me? (I’m not sure. I can tell it doesn’t fit well, but I can’t tell if it’s because it’s too small or the shape isn’t right for my wrist). In any event, I am sure the large would be too large and even if they had a medium size I still wouldn’t repurchase this. Maybe if you’ve got some meat on your bones it would be more comfortable but as you can see, I am a very thin person and this is pressing on all the wrong places. I also feel like the center valley part contributes to carpal tunnel pain because the very firm edges of each side rested right in that area, not offering any support to the valley of the wrist, and therefore creating pressure to that nerve center and the ligaments. I don’t know why they chose this material, it’s too firm. Also, I think a better design would be a little tab from the center of it sticking out and then attaching to the bottom of the mouse so that both mouse and the wrist “support” worked as one unit when moving the mouse around. I often found that I didn’t drag the wrist piece with my mouse well and that it caused even more issues. If it were comfortable I would have made a little tab myself and connected the mouse and the wrist rest together, but as it’s extremely not even remotely comfortable I’m not bothering and I’ve already started the return process.

Quality Product, Definitely Recommend
Size: 17.2"L x 3.15"W x 0.78"H, Color: Black Walnut, Size: 17.2"L x 3.15"W x 0.78"H, Color: Black Walnut
Looks and feels great. Amazingly smooth, and well-crafted. It fits the length of my keyboard, and has quality grippers on the base to prevent sliding. Was actually really pleased with it.

High quality solid wood rest
Size: 14.4"L x 3.15"W x 0.78"H, Color: Black Walnut
This wrist rest is nicely finished and was well packed in high-density foam as well as a cardboard box that was wrapped very tightly in thick plastic. It's sanded very, very smooth and is made of beautiful solid walnut, with nonskid pads on the back. The branding is on the side that touches the keyboard, so it is not visible or obtrusive at all. My keyboard is 15.5 inches long, and the 14.4 inch rest looks great up against it. The 0.78" thickness is also very suitable for the thickness of my keyboard. The product gets 5 stars because it is accurately represented and this is entirely down to personal preference, but something about this rest that I don't love is the degree of incline. I have my keyboard up on the kickstands, and the wrist rest that I already owned slopes pretty dramatically starting from the middle, so it follows the angle of the keyboard. The ZQL wrist rest is about 75% flat and then has a small slope that rounds off on the bottom edge. Again, this is very much a personal thing; I just brought it up because it's something that people might not think too much about until they actually use it. I think this rest would be great for anyone with very large hands, or with a flat keyboard. It's taking a little getting used to for me, but I really enjoy the smoothness and obvious quality of the wood. A wrist rest is an ergonomic must when it comes to thicker keyboards.
