Томас Майн Рід (1818–1883) — ірландський письменник, який за материнською лінією був далеким родичем Вальтера Скотта. У грудні 1839 року поїхав до США на ще не освоєні простори Заходу. Там полював і торгував із індіанцями, познайомився з Едгаром Алланом По. Брав участь у мексиканській війні 1846–1848 рр., був поранений у ногу. Перший роман  'Вільні стрільці' (1850), власне описував події цієї війни. Потім вийшли найкращі романи письменника 'Мисливці за скальпами', 'Квартеронка', 'Оцеола, вождь семінолів' і 'Вершник без голови'.

Дія цього роману відбувається в 1850-х рр. у прикордонних районах штату Техас. Заможний плантатор Вудлі Пойндекстер зі своєю родиною переїжджає зі штату Луїзіана до свого нового будинку, ґасієнди Каса-дель-Корво. Там вони знайомляться з мустангером Морісом, в якого закохується Луїза, донька Пойндекстера. Знищити парубка мріє відставний капітан Келгаун, також не байдужий до цієї дівчини.
