Lightfoot Myrtle Point Pinot Noir 2024 Gippsland is a vegan-friendly cool-climate Australian red wine from Myrtle Point Vineyard. Grown on classic Terra Rossa over limestone, this medium-bodied Pinot Noir combines red berry and dark plum fruit with site-specific savoury elements—sage, oregano, cured meat and smoky spice—with fine, dusty tannins and vibrant colour.
Tasting Notes
Appearance
Vibrant colour with brilliant clarity, displaying the characteristic ruby-red hues of premium cool-climate Pinot Noir. The wine's attractive appearance reflects the quality of fruit from Myrtle Point Vineyard, located high on a limestone bluff above the Mitchell River in the coastal Gippsland Lakes District.
Aroma
The bouquet showcases a combination of red berry and dark plum fruit with site-specific savoury elements. Aromatic notes include sage, oregano, cured meat and subtle smoky spice, creating a sophisticated aromatic profile that demonstrates the distinctive Terra Rossa over limestone terroir and the cool, semi-maritime climate of the Gippsland Lakes District.
Palate
Medium-bodied with fine, dusty tannins, fresh acidity and balanced oak integration, the palate delivers primary fruit expression alongside a touch of forest floor character that provides additional complexity. Made in open fermenters using three different yeast strains and hand-plunged twice daily, the wine was matured for seven months in French oak (10% new) from coopers including Damy, Sirugue, François Frères and Mercurey. The wine has good length and a structure that will support medium-term cellaring, proudly vegan and unfined with animal products.
Pairs With
This versatile Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roasted duck breast or duck confit, grilled lamb with herbs, mushroom risotto or truffle dishes, beef bourguignon, venison or game meats, and aged Gruyère or Comté cheese, whilst its savoury character also complements charcuterie and slow-cooked pork dishes.
Reviews
"It's not overly complex but gee it's a gorgeous, lighter-framed pinot and immediately appealing. Gently spiced, softly fruited with red cherries, with wafts of rosehips and petals and a touch of savouriness, too. It's tangy and juicy, with bright, refreshing acidity and feathery-fine tannins."
